There’s a good reason why breast augmentation continues to be one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures today. Women who have always desired more curves can now have the beautiful, natural body contour they want. However, while the results can be dramatic, scarring is a concern for many patients. This blog covers breast augmentation scars, from where they’re located to the steps you can take to minimize their appearance.

Where Are Breast Augmentation Scars Located?
Breast augmentation incisions vary based on the type of breast implant used and whether additional correction, like a breast lift, is added to the surgery. The most common incision placement includes:
- Periareolar: Encircles the bottom of the areola
- Inframammary: Horizontal line in the lower breast crease
- Transaxillary: Located in the armpit for optimal concealment
Saline implants can be placed through the periareolar incision, since they aren’t filled until they are in the breast tissue. Silicone implants come pre-filled and typically require the inframammary incision to accommodate them. Both types of implants may be placed endoscopically through the transaxillary incision using a specialized insertion funnel. However, this approach is more limited in the size and placement of the implants.
What Do Scars Look Like After Surgery?
Immediately following your surgery, your incisions will be covered in surgical gauze and dressings, so you won’t be able to see what they look like. Dressings are usually removed after about one week, and at that time, they will likely be raised, red, and swollen.
During your initial recovery, it’s critical to avoid any tension on the incisions, as this can affect healing and lead to more visible scarring. You will have a surgical bra to wear after surgery that supports the breasts as they heal and prevents additional strain on your incisions.
How Long Does It Take Breast Augmentation Scars to Heal?
Breast augmentation incisions can take months to heal fully. During the first two months, the scars will gradually fade to pink or brown and flatten out. By three months out, the scar’s color should blend with your natural skin tone. Scars also soften over time, making them less noticeable.
One year after your breast augmentation surgery, your scars should be flush with your skin’s surface, and the color should match your skin tone. Some patients may continue to see improvements in their scars for up to 18 months or longer, particularly those with darker skin tones.
Incision Care Tips to Minimize Breast Augmentation Scars After Surgery
During your breast augmentation recovery, there are steps you can take to care for your incisions and minimize the appearance of scarring:
- Follow all your aftercare instructions carefully.
- Avoid smoking throughout the recovery process.
- Do not expose your scars to direct sunlight or tanning booths.
- Clean your incisions gently; avoid scrubbing or exfoliating the area.
- Apply silicone gel or strips to the incisions to promote healing.
- Avoid lifting anything over five pounds for at least one month.
