Breast Augmentation: Silicone vs. Saline

The most popular cosmetic procedure performed last year was breast augmentation. Women everywhere are taking the steps to attain supple, full breasts. But one of the first things to consider…silicone or saline?

But don’t worry! We’re here to help you figure out which might be the ideal implant for you. So what are the differences between silicone and saline breast implants?

Silicone
Available to women 22 years and older, silicone implants are made up of a silicone shell that contains a silicone gel. They have become the filler of choice for many patients because of their more natural feel and softer feel. Compared to saline, the liquid in the silicone implants is a thicker, more viscous, substance.
Saline
Saline fillers also have a silicone shell, but once the shells are inserted into the breasts, they’re filled with a sterile salt water solution that has the same concentration as the cells of your body. They do not present any health risk to the patient even when ruptured, and they’re available to women at the age of 18 and over.

Why Silicone?

Most women prefer the natural feel of the silicone implants. You may also appreciate the choice of the shell’s texture and the gel’s consistency, giving you more control over the overall firmness and stability, and, of course, size. And no matter the consistency, the silicone gel tends to have more of a resilience than its saline counterpart, meaning a lower chance of rupture. Additionally, you can typically avoid seeing the shell underneath the thin skin, as you can in some cases with saline.

Why Saline?

Saline implants have become the preference for women that want to avoid any improbable health risks that may come from a ruptured silicone implant. As well as being the slightly healthier choice, it is also typically more affordable, and not necessarily at the cost of quality. “Baffled” saline implants, with channels for flow, have a similar feeling to the silicone implants. The cherry on top? Some saline implants have the advantage of being adjustable even after the operation.

But Are Implants Safe?

Safety first! The answer is yes. After alleged health risks during the 80’s and 90’s, that have since been disproved, the FDA launched record-breaking research into silicone gel implants, making it the most widely studied medical device in the history of medical devices! While there are minor risks associated with ruptures, the likelihood of ruptures is very low, as implants have since come a far way. In fact, implants being used today are considered seventh and eight generation implants!

Is the Procedure Safe?

In the hands of an experienced surgeon, you can expect the results you want. The procedure typically only lasts around 1-2 hours, and the recovery only requires you take it easy for a few days after the procedure, avoiding heavy lifting for up to six weeks.

Is Removal a Safe Option?

In the off chance that you decide to remove or replace your implants, the removal process is quick and safe, generally lasting under an hour. Saline implants may be deflated first, but then, the implant (saline and silicone) is usually removed through the same incision that it was inserted.
