How Does a Breast Augmentation Work?

A breast augmentation is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of the breasts. At Kadz Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, CA, Dr. Bruce Kadz proudly offers this procedure to help his clients feel more confident than they have in years. Today, we’re taking a closer look at how this procedure, otherwise known as augmentation mammoplasty, works. We’re also looking at who usually qualifies for this procedure. Let’s get started.

How Does a Breast Augmentation Work?

A breast augmentation works in just a few simple steps. First, you need to attend an initial consultation with Dr. Bruce Kadz to determine definitively if you are a good candidate for this procedure. If you’re a good fit, your procedure will be scheduled, and you’ll need to prepare for surgery. On the day of your procedure, you will be anesthetized and incisions will be made through which the implants will be inserted.

Often, incisions are made in the natural fold of your breast skin beneath your breast. In other cases, incisions are made under the arm, near the navel, or around the areola’s edge. Where your incisions will be made will be determined during your initial consultation. If you opt for silicone implants, they will be inserted through the incisions and placed appropriately. Then, your incisions will be closed. If you get saline implants, they’ll be inserted, placed, then filled.

What Kind of Anesthesia Will Be Administered?

The type of anesthesia administered will be determined during your initial consultation. Most women get general anesthesia, a medication that will both put you to sleep and numb your entire body. This medication is strongly recommended if you are getting a mommy makeover due to the scope of the body improvements. In some cases, though, women get local anesthesia, a medication that only numbs the injection area.

It is important to note that the type of anesthesia selected affects the mandatory preparation steps. You’ll need to refrain from drinking anything for two hours pre-op. Similarly, you’ll need to consume no more than clear liquids starting eight hours before surgery.

Am I a Good Breast Enhancement Candidate?

You need to sit down with Dr. Bruce Kadz to discuss your health history, current health, and current and recent pharmaceutical consumption. This is required so that he can determine whether this procedure will be safe for you. If it is determined that this procedure will be safe for you, the size, shape, and material of the implant will be discussed. Saline, silicone, and structured silicone implants come with their own benefits. It comes down to what benefits align with your goals.

What Incision Location Is Best for Me?

Several factors affect which incision location is ideal for you. Among them are the type of implant you choose, your age, and your weight. If you opt for a saline implant, Dr. Bruce Kadz can make an incision near your navel and use an endoscope to place the implant. The implant won’t be filled until it is in the ideal position. If you opt for a silicone implant, incisions may be made in the underarms, around the areola, or beneath the breast.

It may not be advisable to get an incision around each areola if you plan to nurse in the future. It may not be ideal for you to get incisions made beneath your breasts if you are thin and young and have never given birth. This is because your incisions may be a little more visible while they are healing.

What Implant Type Is Right for Me?

To reiterate, each implant type brings different benefits to the table. Saline implants are safe for women who are at least 18 years of age, but silicone implants are only FDA-approved for women who are over the age of 21. Saline implants also require a smaller incision because they are not filled until they have been placed. It is rare that incisions greater than one inch in length are necessary.

Another reason many women prefer saline implants is that they provide a firmer feel. Moreover, this type of implant provides a rounder look. Some women believe that a silicone implant is right for them because of the natural texture provided by the silicone shell filled with silicone gel. Dr. Bruce Kadz will advise you on the benefits of each implant type and help you determine which best suits your needs and wants.

What Implant Placement Is Right for Me?

It may be ideal for your implant to be placed atop the chest muscle if you are worried about the length of your recovery and manipulation of your chest muscle during surgery. It may be ideal for your implant to be placed beneath the chest muscle if you have very little natural tissue in the area. Placement beneath the muscle may also be ideal if you want your results to look as natural as possible.

Note that implant placement above the muscle in cases of breast sagging. This is because implant placement beneath the muscle can result in the breasts looking unnaturally high. If you want implants placed beneath the chest muscle, you may need a breast lift in addition to an augmentation to achieve natural-looking results.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Some of the most common signs that a breast lift could benefit someone include downward-pointing areolas and nipples, enlarged areolas, stretched skin, and one breast being lower than the other breast. There is also a strong likelihood that you will be considered a good breast lift candidate if your breasts could be described as pendulous, flat, or elongated. Moreover, there’s a very good chance you’ll qualify if you feel like you’ve lost a lot of volume or shape.

Furthermore, you may qualify for a breast lift if you feel like your breasts are sagging. To determine definitively if your breasts are sagging, you can perform the pencil test in front of your mirror. To get an idea of whether this procedure can benefit you, stand in front of the mirror with your breasts unsupported. Do your nipples fall beneath the natural crease of your breast? If they do, you’ll probably be deemed a good fit for surgery.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a suite of procedures tailored to an individual’s concerns and goals to help them restore their self-confidence. Two of the most popular procedures sought are a breast augmentation and breast lift. These procedures are commonly performed together even when women aren’t interested in improving other areas of the body because the same incisions can usually be used to perform both procedures.

Can I Get Liposuction at the Same Time as My Breast Enhancement?

Yes, it is possible to get liposuction at the same time as a breast enhancement. In fact, liposuction is also amongst the most commonly requested procedures with a mommy makeover. Every pregnancy is unique, but most women gain fat during pregnancy. Sometimes, this results in unwanted changes to contours that can’t be reversed without help from a cosmetic surgeon.

Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that has been used for decades to slim down trouble areas all over the body. Most often, women ask for help eliminating excess fat pockets from the upper arms, underarms, abdomen, flanks, and hips. It can also be used to remove excess fat from the lower back, middle back, thighs, knees, and buttocks. If you have a moderate or severe amount of excess fat in an area, you may be a good lipo candidate.

Do I Qualify for a Tummy Tuck?

You may qualify for a tummy tuck if you are concerned with loose or excess abdominal skin. A full tuck will be required if you are displeased with your navel placement or you have concerns about your abdominal muscles. A full tuck can improve both the lower and upper abdominal skin. A mini tuck can only improve the lower abdominal skin.

A breast augmentation improves your appearance by increasing the size of your breasts.
